Royal British Legion volunteer in Alford awarded for 45 years of service

A dedicated poppy seller from Lincolnshire has spoken about his life-long work for the Royal British Legion (RBL) – during which he has raised £90,000.

Carl Short is a familiar face at Alford’s Corn Exchange – having been a volunteer with the Alford and District RBL for 45 years.

He was recently presented with an award for his long-service – adding to this other awards for the previous milestones of 40, 35 and 30 years.

Although his role as an official poppy seller began 45 years’ ago – Carl’s dedication to the cause goes all the way back to his childhood.

"I started selling poppies in Alford with my grandad when I was young,” he said. “My grandad sold them after he came out of service during the First World War.”

Later, Carl’s uncle took over, followed by his mum, with Carl eager to help with the poppy appeal.

"I eventually took over in 1981 doing the poppies round Alford and Lincolnshire for the Royal British Legion,” he said.

"I've been doing it for 45 years now and have raised about £90,000 over the years.

"I started volunteering with Chapel Point National Coastwatch in 2006 too, so I have just got my 20 years service for that. I am their fundraising officer and met Princess Anne in this role.”

Carl says he continues to enjoy fundraising for both the Coastwatch and the poppy appeal, adding: “My age is no barrier. I will be back next year in the Corn Exchange door way.”
