Bassetlaw: Irresponsible dog owners could be slapped with fines for not cleaning up mess

The messages comes after council bosses issued its first £50 Fixed Penalty Notice since launching a new ‘Clean it up’ campaign after a disgruntled resident in the town reported an owner for failing to pick up mess left by their pet.

The campaign has seen slogans such as ‘Dob on a dirty dog’ and ‘Let’s clean up this town’ appear on the council’s refuse vehicles, street sweepers and in other prominent places.

Leader of Bassetlaw District Council, coun Simon Greaves, said: “Dog fouling has emerged as one of the most significant issues raised by residents and we are committed to catching and taking action against selfish and irresponsible dog owners who refuse to clean up after their dogs.”

“I would like to personally thank the resident who has become an active part of our campaign and would encourage other residents to do the same and help us to take enforcement action.”

Currently, offenders who are found guilty of dog fouling or littering can face fines of up to £1,000 and £2,500 respectively. The council’s environmental health enforcement officers can also issue Fixed Penalty Notices of £50 and £80.
